The Tour du Mont Blanc

The Tour du Mont Blanc- often referred to as the ‘TMB’- has long been one of our most popular trips. Apparently the idea of hiking for 2 weeks through spectacular mountain scenery in the European Alps seems to have an appeal- who knew?? Even so- people who aren't familiar with the trek often ask- 'Ok- what is SOOO 'cool' about the TMB??'

Welllll, let me tell you...

First off- it is SO much more than just a 'hiking trip'. No, it is MUCH more than that...

Hiking the TMB is a multicultural experience through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in all of Europe, if not the entire world. It is an exercise in camaraderie and group morale that, when at its very best (I'm looking at you, Team 2024), creates a soul-filling dose of that mysterious and palpable phenomenon known as 'Trail Magic'. It is a formidable challenge, both mentally and physically- one that asks those brave enough to undertake the challenge to fight through the elements, through the sweat, through the moments of asking 'What did I get myself into??' Completing the loop is an EPIC accomplishment- hiking multiple days through the Alps is no easy feat and those who manage it are rewarded with feelings of gratitude, accomplishment and pride in their achievement.

The trek entails hiking through 3 distinctly different countries and cultures: those of France, Switzerland and Italy. It starts in the chic mountain town of Chamonix, France- the epicenter of all things Mont Blanc. Upon departing Chamonix, the trek makes its way through Switzerland, where countless cows, remote refuges and spectacular views await. At the end of Week 1, the trek enters Courmayeur, Italy- a beautiful Italian village nestled in a breath-taking valley. After a full Rest Day, the trek continues through the Val Veny region of Italy- and more mind-blowing scenery- before making the turn for home and heading back to Chamonix, where rest, relaxation and a delicious Celebration Dinner await…

CULTURE- In my opinion, the cultural aspect of hiking the TMB is perhaps the most unexpected- and the most rewarding. The different languages, cultures and customs are ever-changing along the trail- there will be days where you will be greeted with a French ‘Bonjour!’ in the morning, then an Italian ‘Buona notte’ in the evening… It is such a cool and unique experience.

Additionally, the food is IN-CRE-DI-BLE… Both the French and the Italians are world-famous for their cuisines (don’t sleep on the Swiss…), and the food we enjoy along the route is no exception. Freshly baked croissants, delicious tarts and fresh produce, ‘food art’ that looks too pretty to eat… It is a feast for the senses and a gastronomic experience all along the route.

SCENERY- If you are a mountain-lover, the scenery is second to NONE. The Mont Blanc Massif is overwhelmingly impressive, with sparkling glaciers cascading down into the hills above Chamonix. Along the route, the scenery continues to amaze- the towering Alps, quaint, picturesque towns, family-owned chalets and remote mountain lodges tucked amongst the peaks. Quiet forests, beautiful valleys, awesome viewpoints, with plenty of cows, sheep and  wildflowers mixed in along the way… The scenery on this trek is something out of Heaven.

CAMARADERIE- The camaraderie that is formed while hiking the TMB is a real thing. Through the ups and downs, the encouragement given and the sense that ‘we’re all in this together’ inherently bonds the trekking group through the shared experience. Each group experiences something powerful, something they'll remember for the rest of their lives. When it all comes together, that fleeting euphoria and sense of ‘Trail Magic’ makes its presence felt… In addition, we’ll meet hikers from all around the world, with ample opportunities to share a beer or a glass of wine in the garden or on the terrace, sharing stories and enjoying a spectacular view after a long day on the trail.

CHALLENGE & ACCOMPLISHMENT- Hiking the TMB is an epic challenge- 110+ miles through the Alps is no joke. It will take training, self-discipline and determination to adequately prepare for the trek, but OH is it worth it… While on the trek, some moments will be glorious, some will be grueling. Trust me- it is ALL worth it. Completing the Loop is an incredible achievement- lifelong dreams are fulfilled, tears of joy (and relief) are shed, hugs and high-fives go all around. It is an achievement worth celebrating- and we do just that with an awesome Celebration Dinner and a full day to revel in your accomplishment in Chamonix.
